GE Canada recently announced a new Grid IQ Centre to develop sustainable energy smart technologies. Huawei Canada, a global leader in technologies, significantly expanded its operations to 260 employees. Enbridge Gas Distribution recently announced the development of a new state-of-the-art Technology Operations Centre, and Markham’s AMD Canada has invested over $1 billion in the past five years. Markham’s retail sector also continues to grow in response to our strong business and consumer market. In 2011, Cineplex Entertainment announced a new 58,000-square-foot entertainment complex in Downtown Markham with 10 auditoriums, three VIP auditoriums and 2,400-plus seats; and Markville Shopping Centre announced a $110-million renovation that will transform it into a world-class retail environment, catering to Canada’s most cosmopolitan market.

Markham has become known as the ‘high tech capital’ of Canada. More than 400 corporate offices and over 900 high technology and life science companies have chosen to locate in Markham. The employment generated by the high tech and life science sectors account for over a quarter of the current total employment of 170,032 (2008 employment figures). The combination of high quality facilities, easy highway access, a highly educated workforce and a pro-business environment has made Markham home to many world-renowned corporations like IBM, American Express, Motorola, and Honeywell to name a few.
The population growth in the area of Downtown Markham is projected from 184,285 in 2008 to 215,628 in 2018. This growing market has the highest amount of discretionary income per person in Ontario, providing excellent business opportunities for high-end retailers. In the 5 km primary trade area of 184,285 people or 53,139 households surrounding the area of Downtown Markham, over 40% of the household incomes were in the $100,000 plus range.
